How has the consumption of music videos changed over the years ?

• Internet: All artists have their own website with their music available on these websites. This gives access to international artists as it allows them to put their music out there.

• Youtube: Youtube is one of the biggest way in which audiences can now access music videos. Youtube has millions of videos available. This allows access people from anywhere in the world with connection to the internet to access millions of music videos. 

• Itunes: itunes is a database which has over 28 million songs available. This database was created by apple and has over 400 millions active users. It also serves over 315 mobile devices these include ipods, iphones and ipads. 

• Unsigned Artists: There are many artists that haven't been signed to a record label however want to get their music available for people to listen to.  There are mediums created for people that don't have a record deal however want to show off their music. An example of a website is unsigned.com. 

• Radio: Radio is another aspect of consuming music as before radio was used more for discussions and asking people for their opinions on something. However these days it has become one of the means for people to consume music.

• TV: One of the biggest means of accessing music videos is Television these days. One of the most popular music video channel is MTV which was launched on 1981 in New York.

• Music Stores: One of the most known music shop is hmv that has been one of the most important means of accessing music videos from 60s to the 90s. However there has been a change the way people access music. This has affected hmv sales and they received a downfall. 

How has the music industry changed over the years ?

The main purpose of a music video is to promote the song and promote the artist. A music video is type of short film that is primarily made to promote the song. They are usually called promo Music videos can be classed one of the most important part of a musicians career as  music video allows the artist to express him/herself. It is when an artist can show off its vocal lengths as well its looks and dance moves. There has been a difference between the aim of making a music video before and now. Years back the purpose of making music videos were different to what t is these days. This may be because before they weren't many places that music videos could be viewed. The only source to watch music videos was the television however, they weren't many music channels.
They weren't any social networking sites and infact they were less people who owned televisions.  Due to that it was hard to promote music videos. However the developments over the years made it easier to promote music videos through television. 

First ever music video

This is a song called St Louis blues by Bessie Smith. This is an example of first ever music videos.  The singer Bessie Smith is seen drinking and singing about her love. She is then seen in a pub drinking. Then we see a choir playing the saxaphone. The video has a very bad quality and the songs hasn't been dubbed on the music video however we see the singer actually singing the song live. This film was two reel short film; Bessi Smith does a dramatised performance. This performance was shown in the theatres until 1932. The purpose during thattime was to entertain people and only rich people could afford to go to the theater and watch it.
If one comapres this first video by bessie Smith and music videos these days there are no simalairities. Music Videos these days rely on technologies such as special effects.These days the use of these professional editing softwares allows one to produce high quality music videos.These days music videos have a narrative o a s toryline to them and usually are ina  form of a short film however St Loius Blues is a performance based music video as Bessie Smith is filmmed singing to the camera.
The technology has a huge impact on vievers these days as it allows music video makers to do range of things.


Michael Jacksons Thriller 
Micheal Jackson's thriller music video was the first ever video that introduced the concept of a short film. This video has a beginning a middlekjk and an end to it. Since this many people started following the concept of short films and thus many music videos had some sort of a storyline and concept to it. Music Videos from Micheal Jackson such as 'Billie Jean' put MTV in the limelight as they tarted playing music videos that were in the form of a short film. However, during that time MTV refused to put Micheal Jackson's music video on their channel on racist grounds because he was black. However, Micheal Jackson's label threatened the channel and this ended to be the best decision for both parties as since that MTV received alot of mainstream attention and many people enjoyed music videos put into the form of short films with a storyline.
Moreover, Micheal Jackson's dancing talent was a huge hit aswell as people wernt used to see people dancing and singing at the same time. Thriller has become the highest grossing music video of all time and 9th highest grossing album.
Through this music video Micheal Jackson produced one of the most famous dancing step which was the 'moonwalk' and this aspect of the music video was one reason that this music video was appreciated by many people and thus is one of the most higher grossing music video.


History of MTV

MTV is known to have the biggest impact on the music industry.MTV was launched on 1st of August in 1981. MTV was a music channel that was hosted by people known as VJ's (video Journalists). MTV was a very popular music channel and soon became the most watched channel for music events, concerts , news and promotion. It was a platform for artists to show of their talent visually and vocally. The artists started producing music videos in form of short films for the audience that gave them better understanding of the music videos. Trough these music videos audience got more interested and that interested them to buy music from specific artists.
Artists themselves also enjoyed the success of MTV as it gave them a platform to promote their music and sell their music to its fans. The impact of MTV on artists was the fact that MTV allowed them to promote their music through video's. MTV  has had a big impact on the music industry as it has allowed artists to create music videos that has entertained many.

Youtube
Youtube is another platform that has given unknown artists the opportunity to create music and put them on youtube so they get recognized by record labels. Many youtube singers are known for having a fanbase on youtube and recognized for their music on youtube. These youtubers usually do covers of different known songs in order to shoe off their talent.
There are many examples of artists that have become popular through youtube or got recognized through youtube. One of the biggest example is Justin Bieber who posted his videos on youtube and how his manager found him. Another example is Rebecca Black who got popular for all the wrong reasons. Rebecca Black was an unknown artist who created a music video called 'friday' which was very popular and it received over 50 million views on youtube. The video alot of criticisms as the lyrics were extremely bad and Rebecca Blacks vocal talent was bad aswell. However through this she received a record deal and started producing more music.
Even known artists such as Usher, Eminem, Rhiana and beyonce etc also use youtube to sell their music videos and these recieve millions of views

Impact of digital technology

These days the technology is easily accessible and not exactly expensive which means editing software's and cameras can be bought by people and makes it easy for people to produce professional looking music videos. Wether there are known or unknown artists they are able to produce good music videos. With the rapid development in the technologies people are able to produce  amazing music videos with stunning visuals. These editing software's are used to create stunning visuals that provide entertainment to the audience.
The quality of music video has been changed over the years aswell after the introduction of things like HD ( High Defination) aswell as 3D(3 dimensional). This has given a positive impact on the music industry as it has allowed one to produce high quality standard music video. The year by year developments in the technology has been very positive for the music industry and this has only given great potential to the music industry.
However, these days the ability to download music on the internet both legally and illegally has had a negative impact on the music industry as people aren't paying for their music and thus this means the audience is not paying for the artists production. Due to this the illegal downloading is increased and the sales of especially music stores have decreased immensely. This can be a big impact on the artists as the audience is not paying for the music which means the artists sale goes down.

Record label name

Record Label:

A further important decision that we needed to make as a group was that we needed to choose a record label name.

To do this we decided to first of all research existing record label names and from this research we would then try and from this research find other names of records labels which we could create to use in our own work.

The record label name that we have chosen to use is Empire record labels.

The reason for which we choose this specific record label name was that we felt that it conveyed power and wealth whilst also appearing as a international company, therefore as a group came to the joint decision that we would use Empire Records as our record label name.

As a group we found the task of choosing on an artist name especially difficult. This was due to the fact that we were all aware of the importance that an artist name holds as many famous pop artist have changed their names in order to me both easily memorable and spoken by fans no matter their mother tongue but at the same time be unique and stand out from the crowd. Examples of artist who have had to change their names include; Lady Gaga whose actual name is

Stephanie and JessieJ whose actual name is Jessica Cornish.

In the pursuit of an artist’s name we begun brainstorming a variety of different unique yet easily memorable name, below are a list of names that we found:

From this list we then begun ruling out the names that we did not think suitable for a pop artist. This helped us in narrowing down the large variety of name ideas that we had found.

After a number of discussions we finally came to the joint decision that our artist name would be Marni.

There are a number of reason for which we chose this name.

The first is that this name is unique not one of the three of us could think of anyone who known or had heard of having the name.

Furthermore we felt that whilst it being unique from other names it was also easy to pronounce and this is a key issue that any artist needs to consider if they want to achieve global success.

Finally, we believed that this name is one that will prove memorable for our target audience.
