planing album advert

Before creating my own music advert I researched into different advert albums of the pop genre. I researched into different things such as codes and conventions , font , typography , colours and images. I looked at different pop female artists and their album adverts; all adverts were different according to the image of the artist. For example Katy Perry's album advert was made of all soft colours such as light pink. This is similar to the songs on the album and her image as she is known for wearing 'girly' costumes. I then started designing my album advert on paper. I created two different examples of my album advert on paper. When designing my album advert on paper I made sure  I take in account the codes and conventions of the pop genre.

When researching I liked Jessie J first album cover which has her dressed all black however she has shiny lips and her name is written in golden in bold which makes it stand out. Another album advert that I like was Ellie Goulding album 'Lights'. This album advert is simple as we see Ellie Goulding with hardly any makeup and the font is quiet simple however the light effect on the sides makes the album advert stand out.

My designs on paper will assist me with designing my album advert on the computer. I used Adobe Photoshop to create my design. As photoshop requires everything done on layers the paper design will help me easily decide what image goes on what layer. The paper design will make it easier for me to do draw on the computer as I would know exactly what I need to do. Below are my paper designs:

This was my initial design. I used this image and defined the image by using blur tool on photoshop This allowed me to soften the edges. I then positioned the image on the left side of the page. I then saved an image  background of a black wood wall from a copyright website. I created another layer and inserted the image in the back. I then used the text tool to write the album name. However the yellow font that I used didn't go well with the background it made it hard to read as the colour was similar to the colour of the image. The colours in this album advert didn't go with the colour that are used throughout my music video. I also felt that the advert isn't conventional to the pop genre. This is because the colour 'black' denotes 'darkness' and 'danger' and that isn't conventional with the pop genre.

I used another image from the photoshoot I carried out. I edited that image and defined it by using the blur tool. I also used the paint tool to define the artists eyes. This advert was conventional as the colours that I used were quiet bright and 'eye catchy' which is common of the pop genre. The layout of the advert wasn't conventional as the text didn't fit in properly. I used the shape tool to fit the artists name in however I didn't particularly like it. I then asked my fellow class mates and asked them what they think of it. They suggested that I have a lot of colours that I have used and thus it doest draws attention on one but makes the viewer confuse on what to look at. I agreed with the feedback I received and designed another advert on paper making sure I take in consideration the feedback I received.

This is my final design, I decided to use the same image as I felt that it went well with the artists image as its dressed and she looks proud of herself however, she isn't overly dressed. I decided to create the background of the image, I created that by using the filter in photoshop. I choose these colours as I felt they are very conventional to the pop genre as well as it went well with the dress, makeup and text. It also looked consistent as I used colours that compliment each other. I also  used bold sharp font as the album is called 'glassheart' which is very edgy and the font compliments the font that I used.
This will appeal to the target audience as the colours are very attractive and goes well with the artists dress as she is dressed well. The target audience can relate to the way the artist is dressed.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of the choices and decisions that you made to your magazine advert. You have started to analyse your designs, by commenting on the choices that you made to the colours and the images and photoshop effcts, but further detail is needed throughout.

This can be achieved, by focusing on the target audience, conventions and pop codes and conventions.

Also how will you share this design with your group and consider a group design?
